For every 5db increase in volume, the time needed to potentially cause hearing loss is halved.

Decibels (dB) and Hearing Loss

A decibel, abbreviated dB, is a logarithmic unit of measurement for sound wave intensity. One decibel is one-tenth of a bel, which is a unit attributed to Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. The decibel was invented to measure the dilution of a signal in telephone cables. That said the measurement is a bit more complicated mathematically and acoustically.

For practical purposes, sparing the novice mathematician / physicist calculus involved, a scale may be of some use. 0 dB is the threshold of human hearing, or absolute silence. A library whisper is approximately 20 dB, whereas normal conversation is around 60 dB. A thunder clap may reach 90 dB, while a rock concert may peak near 120 dB. The threshold of pain for most humans is about 130 dB. Interestingly, the muzzle blast from most handguns may reach as high as 160 dB!

Clearly this is not a desirable result. However there is great news! Such noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is 100 percent preventable! Good hearing health can be practiced in everyday life using a few very simple methods. One is knowledge: knowing what dB level is considered dangerous. Most studies indicate that long or repeated exposure to noise levels above 85 dB leads to some permanent hearing loss. This may be equivalent to heavy city traffic. Even a one-time exposure to an intense impulse sound (such as an explosion) may cause NIHL. It has been confirmed that exposure to sounds lower than 75 dB does not lead to hearing damage. Clearly, sounds that are too loud, too close or last too long are the cause of NIHL.

The other method of preventing NIHL is to wear proper ear protection in those suspected noisy environments. The days of odd-looking multi-colored earplugs are thankfully over! New technology has emerged that not only protects your ears from the intense, impulsive peaks of gunfire on the range, but on noisy construction sites as well. Many of these “electronic earmuffs”, as they are known, have technology to amplify surrounding sounds and cut-off sounds that may lead to NIHL. Normal conversation is not jumbled, for instance. Additionally, these products have options to accept your MP-3 player, tune-in a favorite FM station, or even link to a range master or site foreman! The days of silly-looking ear protection are history. Not only are these electronic earmuffs effective in preventing NIHL, they are practical for the specific end user. Over the hat, under the helmet or around the neck, there is a model for every function.

As one can see, decibels are a useful tool for human measurement. Not only do we know which sounds may be dangerous or cause NIHL, but now we know we can protect ourselves in a noisy environment by using hearing protection. Even in environments where we expect mostly quiet, such as the woods, the intensity of that gunshot may lead to preventable hearing loss. Those pesky decibels that remind us of the dangers of NIHL have met their match! Wear hearing protection!

Additionally, the device will have as few openings as possible to minimize the risk of water damage. To keep water out, a waterproof silicone membrane will protect the device. There will also be a protective top cover that will shield the membrane and serve as an extra layer of waterproof protection.

Despite the silicone membrane's waterproof nature, it will still allow air to flow into the earpiece. The Aquaris will run on zinc air batteries, which are also used in film cameras and vehicle propulsion engines. Such batteries work by allowing zinc inside the battery to oxidize with oxygen cells from the environment around the device in which the battery is implanted. Thus, it is important that the waterproof technology of the earpiece still allow oxygen inside the device, which the waterproof membrane is capable of doing.

According to Siemens, the waterproof hearing aid will also be dustproof. This will be helpful to many people, including those who work in places where dust is prevalent, such as farmers and mill workers. Additionally, the device will be shock resistant, which will benefit people with high-impact lifestyles such as extreme sports enthusiasts.

School Hearing Test Helps Stop Destructive Behavior

Sometimes it is the annoyances in our day that end up being lifesavers. When I was in third grade every student in my school had to go through routine inspections of their eyes and ears to make sure that we were seeing and hearing all right. When I was singled out during the hearing test I began to cry. It is not comfortable when among your peers something about you is different. I was not any happier when I got home and the school nurse had called my parents. The nightmare would not end in the weeks ahead when I was seeing doctors and specialists and my life had gone from kickball and tag to various tones and instruments and something called audiology.

Not only was it loud, but the music that went along with the shows would have turned up to the highest possible volume. Doctors asked if I did noise-canceling headphones during the show. My uncle did, but the kids thought they were nerdy looking, so none of us wore them.

The hearing test and subsequent visits to the doctor made my family aware that I should not be close close at the fireworks shows anymore. The professionals insured it would be OK if I went, but I needed to wear the headphones. My parents figured that they had made a mistake in letting me go in the first place and was not going to risk allowing me any more close calls.

My mom was really worried that her recklessness was going to cause me a long-term issue. The doctors insisted that because the hearing test tipped them off to the problem, and we were addressing it by keeping me away from more loud shows, that I would not suffer any further problems.
