Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment is one of the newest treatments for tinnitus that has been shown to be effective in 90% of patients who were deemed good candidates for treatment. If you have been trying to reduce your tinnitus symptoms without success, this treatment may be right for you! This is not the standard retraining therapies that many offices offer, nor is this a standard hearing aid or tinnitus masker. This therapy is linked to a device that provides both sound and music therapy as an integrated approach that promotes development of new connections at the level of the brain.
The device, called an Oasis, is very small, discreet, and lightweight. A custom combination of music and a secondary acoustic signal is delivered to the ear via head phones. These combined signals stimulate neural pathways. Each user will have a customized sound signal that is created to suit their tinnitus needs. The pathway of the central auditory nervous system is stimulated, promoting neural plasticity growth. This growth leads to new brain connections that reduce the perception of tinnitus over time. These changes will allow for not only short-term relief of tinnitus symptoms, but long-term management and relief.
Research of this treatment has shown excellent clinical efficiency, with 90% of good candidates yielding great results. This treatment does not simply hide the tinnitus effects, but rather treats the possible neurological cause. Patients can enjoy long-term symptom relief long after the treatment time ends. This is not a temporary fix.
Treatment time is approximately six months. Some patients even note immediate relief at the start of treatment! In order to determine candidacy, a trained audiologist will evaluate the hearing and tinnitus thoroughly. Once results are completed, all treatment options will be discussed. If the patient is a candidate for this treatment, an appointment for Oasis fitting will be set. The patient will be fit with the Oasis and the sound stimuli will be adjusted to suit the patient's hearing and tinnitus needs.
There are two phases of treatment. These Phases work to first relieve symptoms and then actually break the neural cycle of tinnitus. Your audiologist will provide any needed information and support during the course of your treatment period. Be sure to ask questions you may have along the way!
Phase 1: Symptom Relief
During this first phase, the Oasis should be worn for a minimum of two hours a day during normal everyday activities. The time span for this phase varies, but most patients complete phase 1 in approximately two months.
Phase 2: Developing Neural Connections
This phase works to break the neural tinnitus cycle. To start, the Oasis is worn for at least two hours every day. Over time, wear time is gradually reduced as tinnitus symptoms lessen. For most patients, this stage lasts about four months.
